If Aliens Landed In My Back Yard…

If aliens landed in my back yard, I would go up to them and ask, "Where is Elvis?" Then, if they did not answer me, I would steal their vehicle and take a joy ride. Then I would ask them if they were related to E.T. Then I would accidentally turn them into the government, but I would still keep their vehicle.

Last Day OF SCHOOL!!!!

Tyla's Shadow Poem

I'm from the cold and Winter, where the sun hides.
I'm from the sunsets you see on top of the mountains, where water runs down rivers to the oceans.
Im from nothing, where everything is so still an plain.
I'm from the city that talks, where people seem to always come to wonder.
I'm from hard pain and strength to from bigger and stronger.
I'm from dark nightmares that may become reality, and shadows that will be brought to light.
Yes, I'm from this earth God has put me on for a reason, to live and learn and to achieve my goals in life.

the world greatest problem

You know sometimes I see the Hate

like a Debate from those who can't Relate

so they attempt to Compensate and Bait

then Wait for it's Fate some will Decorate

all that Hate they were waiting to Detonate

hiding in the shadows behind the Cyber Gates

and those haters makes us all get really Irritate

I guess they like to watch this worlds Hate Escalate

always good times

when someone screws around with photo booth and doesnt delete there photos

The arctic land

These Arctic mountain full of cloudy sky's.The dry grass mountains full of different types of flowers, some were yellow, others were pink or purple to white.Other flowers were just a mystery. While I was walking up this so called"Arctic land"there was a reason why this land named the Arctic. When I was trying to keep on going up this cold freezing air hitting my face.Like ice cubes falling from the sky.I was becoming tired and weak the sweat drawing down to my face like drops of hot oil.Yet there was something that kept me going. The dream of wanting to finish and get on top of the mountain and become victorious. When I was looking around I can see the sky,the different forms of the clouds. Some where gray, others were white or just both.Yes! I'm a winner cause I finally made it to the Arctic top.Now please wish me luck I hope I'll make it back down. Enduring the ice cube wind.Bye!

Jaecob's Shadow Poem

Childhood

I am from  a family of eleven,
I am from cramped spaces,
I am from from sharing one room,
with six brothers.

I am from counting every cent,
I am from a tralier,
I am from tiny yards,
I am from no cable or internet,
I am from the past.

DJ's cool Haiku

The green big mountain
Has the biggest rock ever
Been there forever

Jaecob's Haiku

                      My Quest

                 My muscles are sore
                   Hiking is challenging
                   need some more water

My Shadow Poem

During the early years, I always use to wake up and smell the fresh air.
My mom would pick me up and brush my hair.
I remember I always use to eat lots of candy.
But I always used to watch one of my favorite movies, Bambi.
When I was little, I was always close to Richard.
Especially when we were watching Sesame Street, I loved watching Big Bird.
But I have matured and still growing up today.
But have also made lots of mistakes in so many ways.
I still like going out to play,
but not only just during the day,
because there will be many other days,
and I will enjoy every phase.

Alma's shadow

I'am from exploring new things and having fun.I'am from looking whats around, full of curious thoughts.I'am from drawing to singing then to acting.I'am from loving sweets to disliking sourness.I'am from"never give up" to "you are strong you can make it".I'am from loving and caring no matter how much rejection you give me.I'am from the mysterious night shadow to avoiding sunny days.I'am from dark purple to pure white snow color.I'am from defending loved ones.I'am from being happy with the little memories I can remember of.I'am from not caring if others dislike me to happyness of knowing that I have people that love me.I'am from being greatfull with what I have.I'am from loving my family even if one of them don't love me back.I'am who I'am and shall forever be known as Alma:)

Day 9- Alyeska

This is Faitau reporting on Thursday, Day 9 of Write Alaska:

Today at Alyeska it was a windy and hot summer day. People were excited and were ready to walk on this journey. The teachers stacked our backpacks with lots of water bottles and less snacks on the trip. Before we went hiking, Ms. Barb separated us into six different groups. There was fastest to slowest. Lots of people went to the slowest group and everybody else picked their own speed. We all used the restroom first and Dr. Andrew’s team went hiking before everybody else. When we walked up the first steep hill the slowest team got very tired while the others surpassed us from a far distance. The second group was running up the steep hills like nothing and everyone else was walking normally. The last group took too many breaks, as the second last group did, too.

We found out that we had lost track of the others when we saw two paths going up or down. We checked down the path to check if anyone was there, but no one was and so we checked the other path and we saw Mr. Ben’s group going up the steepest hill on mount Alyeska. We made it up there and heard the river flow and jumped on the snow, then we got even more tired and started staying back until the last group came up. I stayed back while the others went and the first person I saw was Fili walking up with a bamboo stick like a real hiker would do. We walked up the last steep hill and then my camera died, then I got so mad that I threw a rock at my head. Fili and I made it up to the top and the first thing we did was dropped on the grass and relaxed. People were we sitting inside the base and just walking all around the place. People were happy that they made it up mount Alyeska and people got scared when we went down the elevator going down to the bus. Today was hurtful and tiring, but I still made our day in mount Alyeska.

Haiku

The rain rains like mist
It is very cloudy out here
Ground is muddy from rain

I wish you were here

we will reunite one day in that clear blue sky

and start over where we left off, with your silent goodbye

its been about 16 years and tears still fall

but tear from a sorrowful heart has no time at all

we had a bond, not like one you'll find everyday

I wish you were here, for this i truly wanted to say

Shadow poem

I am from the moose
from meat, plants, and berries.
I am from dusty towns
to the basketball courts.
From Andy and Minnie mouse.
I'm from flat tundras
Napaskiak to Kwethluk.
I am from herders of the west.
From Guy's and Alexie's
to Jacob's and Spein's
I am from this Earth.

Shadow poem

I am from hot and dusty,
from rocky and brown.
I am from fun in the sun and time for a swim.
I am from hide and seek
and "tag you're it!" From give love, get love
and "too bad, so sad."
I am from dragons and fairies that decorated my walls,
and long swims in the sun.
I am from loving to get scared and loving to scare,
and reading Stephen King books by the fire.
I am from a loving family and I love it!

Day 8- Fishing in Hope/Hiking Palmer Creek

Today's report is about fishing at Hope. We began our day having breakfast and getting our things ready to go fishing and hiking. After everyone was done eating, they started to call us on the bus. When we got on the bus everyone was quite until the bus started moving and the music started playing. While some of us were sleeping, others were laughing and playing. The back of the bus was more active then the front. The Ride was about two hours long but when we got half way there we stopped at Turnagain for a bathroom break. When some students were taking a bathroom break others were readjusted themselves for the rest of the ride. About a hour later we soon arrived at Hope an began to unpack. When we were all ready to fish and got our gear on we ate lunch before we went out to fish.
We caught a good amount of fish and we got a little tired, took a rest and went at it again. Some people caught their limit and some didn't. We saw a black bear cub in the river so we had to get out of the water. While everyone was fishing everyone else was cooking food and making some smores. After everyone done fishing we all came together and ate some hot dogs, burnt smores and beans. Later, everyone was done eating and putting things away. When we were done eating and putting things away, we were called on the bus to leave back to Anchorage. So on the way back we were allowed to listen to our Ipods and eat what we wanted on the bus. Almost everyone was talking and laughing on the bus, because everyone was so energized from fishing and hiking, and ready to leave. The people who were not talking and laughing were sleeping from the hike an from fishing for so long. The bus ride back seemed very short than the bus ride there. When we got back to the school district building, everyone was able to get Popsicle's an extra snacks/drinks to bring home.

Hope of bright darkness

This land called "hope",really is hope. While I was walking though this strange forest or woods. While looking around I could see the brightness, but not for long, the darkness fought against the brightness. It was like a battle,or the dance of the two fighting for life or death. When I was in the darkness, I felt wonderful, you may think that the light is better than the darkness, well in this case NO!.The times that I felt the sun hovering,I felt like I was on fire,on the other hand with the darkness I felt freash. The burning pain started to drift away, felt like a wolf in the darkness, with power and strength. While in the light,I felt like a weak butterfly. In the darkness I felt safe. Is it safe to wrong to like the darkness when in need. When I came to the end,my hope came back.I shall not forget this day,it shall be called"the bright darkness".

Mountain Inspiration

When I hike on top of the hill, I begin to feel a cold chill.
As the cool wind blows in my ears, I just feel like somethings near.
I hear the birds in the air, while seeing the day crystal clear.
I know now the end of the day is coming near.
When going down the hill feeling tired and weak, I still feel like I want to take another peek.
The view so beautiful and one of a kind, I know It would blow anyones mind.
People might say this sight is boring, that's why they are liars.
But when I look at it, I feel inspired.

C's for christ

I'm not a priest but one thing is true
Its a nation of priests that i call my crew
We've been beaten and battered to ashes and dust
But nobody seems to get rid of us
I'll curse you like god cursed Mitzrayim with plagues
Ages of darkness, the bloodiest days
Death to your first son!
Boils on everyone!
Vermin and locusts!
Flaming hail focused
as blood makes the red sea
But you don't get no mercy

Artic valley - Queenitra Letuli

Queenitra Letuli

On July 19, 2011 our science class when to Arctic Valley for a hike up 1000ft and hike back down 1000ft. Finding ways to have an excuse to stop and take a break on the trail before hitting the top of the mountain I stumbled across this little pretty flower called Alpine Forget–Me-Not. When I first saw it I thought I was a bloom Bluebell.
As small as Alpine Forget-Me-Not flowers are had a big impact on me. It gave a thought about having it in my reading.

The fly

There was a fly on my shorts walking and looking around. Why did it come? Where did it come from? What did it want from me? Did he want to eat me or was it just curious? Well, while he was doing his business or whatever he was doing he got smashed for bugging me.

My Flower!

This flower is classified as a fireweed. This picture was taken at Artic Valley, on July 18, 2011. Fireweed can grow up to 7 feet tall, but this species of fireweed is a dwarf fireweed. It is shorter than normal fireweed because it grows on a mountain. As you can see, its four pedals are a very bright magenta, and its stem is a deep red color. This is one of my favorite pictures that I took that day.

Superman powers and one other power

If i could have any super powers it would be just like supermans. I say this because superman is my basketball's players nickname and he's me idol. Not joking around. You would see me flying around everywhere and you would wish that you were me. Yes the best living person on earth. The other power that I would love to have is the power to take napes where ever I go. So because i can be like the sand man you know like keeping time and sleeping all the time. The two best powers to have ever.

Sunrise

The sunrise from the west give us lights,
The lights overhead the sun shine,
shine over our head make us tan,
then burn us dead.

Shadow Poem

I am from bad naghborhoods and broken homes risen from the ashes.
I am from weak parents to strong sisters.
I am from one bedroom appartments to three story houses.
I am from bad to good.

I am from tall, tall, trees to be lost in.
I am from Taco Bell & Mc.Donalds..... daily.
I am from tall tails and lost truths.
I am from curly, cut, cute, hair.
high exectations.
I am expected to be not where im from.

I am from hidden seas of blankets with my best friend teady.
I am from my own world.
green grass, blue skys, bright flowers, and bright shining suns.

Sebastian's Shadow Poem

I am from the last frontier, home of the big blueberries.
I am from little Russian Mission AKA Chuathbluk (chew-oth-ba-luck)
The village a few miles above the half breeds, this village we are above is called Aniak.

I am from the descendants of the Zaukar and Alexie family.
From Evan and Sophie, I am from the Chief's son, therefore I am his grandson.
I am from people who give and receive respect, from the land where we strive for food, we live off the land.

I am from a house where my backyard is the woods.
Where we hunt moose, bears, and caribou.
Where we go down to the river bank to catch salmon.
This is where I am from.

creative piece 1 Daniel Etzwiler

When I go up the Mountain I can feel the rocks moving every time I take a step, and the rocks go down the hill.
When I set down on the grass, it's poking my body every time I move around, and the ground is hard too.
When I look around I see a lot of pretty mountains all around my head.
There are kids running around and walking around too.
I can taste sweat coming down my face.
My tongue can taste salt .
The other things that i can taste are my food that tasted okay, but it was good energy.

Day 7- McHugh Creek to Potter's Marsh

Today we took off on another hike. We drove for almost an hour till we got to McHugh Creek and piled out of the bus. We gathered together to get a lecture from Darin about bears. He told us there were many on the trail and that we needed to stay in a 100 foot radius of each other. If we saw any we were to get together and make loud noises to scare it off. We headed up the stairs and stopped for a quick potty break. Then we walked towards the tree-filled trail.

During the trail we saw big loads of bear poop. It was filled with many colors. Some of us wondered what the bear was eating. After the pretty simple hike, we sat down and ate a pleasant lunch. Then, we all gathered up to get on the bus and drive back to the ASD building. When we got back, most of the students were bummed that we had to go back to class for about ten minutes.

Reflection

The sun is blinding
heat getting higher
with all the concerns
Nobody looks at the bright side
great views surround us
with majestic mountains
the wonderful light is everywhere
It's so bright that water is clear
we have twice the pleasure
with everything doubled.

Day 6- Eagle River

Today On Entertainment Tonight

We have reporter Jiekabeu. We have just received information about the Write Alaska class ditching the Science Alaska class to go on an awesome hike in the rain, where they had a chance to get their shoes soaked and muddy. From the trail they were  hiking on to the resting point beside the Eagle River. From our top secret agent we have obtained data on the activities they enjoyed in sarcasm. They started off with walking through the woods to get to their destination. Then they stopped by Eagle River to participate in various exercises. One of them involved skipping rocks into the river or who could throw the farthest rock. Another consisted of writing an inspirational haiku. If you don't know the definition of the word haiku, it is a Japanese poem that has only three lines. The first line is five syllables, the second line seven, and the last five syllables. After a while, they decided to headed back to headquarters. Some of the students sang some platoon songs and others argued about which way to go.

Today with the Agent

Today's trip wasn't really what I expected. It rained before we got off campus, then when we got off the bus we gathered into our groups to decide who was going to hike the trails and who was staying back at the center. Sadly, my group had to hike the trails not knowing it was very muddy. I walked into a lot of disappointment. That was very uncool and halfway through the hike we had to walk along this stream that soaked my shoes like crazy. It didn't feel comfortable at all. We were close to the center when Fili started singing marching songs out loud to scare away any animals and believe me he did. Even though there were arguments our group stuck with the hike and made it through!

Lucy's where i'm from

I am from a mother, including five others
three sisters, and two brothers,
from a hard working man, that always wears plaid
a man with a beard, that I call my dad.
I am from true happiness, to the worst that can come
these things are a part of me, these things I am from.
From Saturday's sunshine, and breakfast ready
to hectic nights, and late night spaghetti.
From a mother who couldn't overcome her addiction
this is me, growing up in chronic affliction.
Don't get me wrong, I am more than this.
I am from goofy laughter and pure bliss,
from award winning breakdowns, and disappointing letdowns
I am from the great big fall, and rising above it all,
from something I had, to something I miss
I will always be from better than this.

My Shadow

I am from a big family,
I am from many memories,
Memories good and bad.
Nonetheless, memories.
A big family means big support, right?
Not always.
But why complain?
I am from a family who cares about me,
I am from a welcoming home,
An understanding home.
I am from sharing rooms, and sharing food.
I am from a loud house,
A house where peace is solemnly seen
But a place I seek to find peace.
I am from the only place i'd rather be.

i am from where your not from

I am from where the mango falls violently
the palms tree sway, the wind silently.
where the corner street voices harmonize
sing that sweet song FAIR EAST SIDE.

I am my mother and father's son
that grew up near the clear blue ocean.
I am who they made me out to be
strong willing, and also balky.

I am from the street that blazed up in smoke
on the night of my birthday, the fireworks provoke.
I am from the land of my ancestors
where little kids grow up able to be doctors.

But I am not from what they say I am from
generally my home came along way from being bombed
through pain and sorrow of the emergency
this place is what i call home, hawaii

Rachelle's Nature Poem

My feet feel like they are blistering.
But I try my hardest with the sun glistening.
As I was walking up the trail.
I never gave up because I knew I wouldn't fail.
As I was standing on the top of Arctic Valley, I start to view nature's beauty.
I am wandering around, then I start to smell the chocolate flower's duty.
Although I wanted to stop and quit.
Seeing this beautiful sight makes it all worth it.

Adam's Shadow Poem "where everything grows green"

I am from the Alaskan pine, where everything grows green, I am from a city where I grew up, I am from a neighborhood where everyone is kind, and where their lawns are freshly cut and hedges trimmed, I am from a state where the winter is dark and cold, where the trees covered in snow are glistening in the light. I am from the spring that washes away the bare cold and the white snow, where the warmth comes back into the air and where the green comes back into the trees and the grass and everything around us.

Arctic Valley

As the cool, clean breeze of mountain air rushes past my body,
I see the small neighborhood of Eagle River,
I see many colors blending in with each other.
The green, yellow, brown, at a far distance the colors start to darken
into blue, red, and violet.
I hear a flock of tiny birds as they sing sweet songs that sound like a melody.
I sit on a patch of moss that is soft, but rough feeling, it's also warm.
The sun starts to peek out of the clouds and warm the cold ground.
A few pikas here and there, the sounds of their cry echos.
I can taste a hint of that mountain air, but I can't describe the taste.

The Glacier

Cool, still, serene. Like a giant pile of mint ice cream, it's cold and crisp. It's as white as the clouds and smells fresh, like cold rain. The melted water that falls from the ice mass is wonderful. After a walk I couldn't resist dunking my head in to cool off. An immediate rush of freshness covered my head. The water dripped down my back the whole walk to the bus. It was refreshing and calming.

Gull Rock/ Hope

When I went to Hope I took some photos of an Island I saw so both were the Island. The first photo was from far away and we were only like 5 or 6 miles away from where we started from.
The second photo Is from 4 or 5 miles away. As you can see It's a lot farther away. From what I saw the Island looked like it had either some sitka spruce trees or some black spruce trees.
There was also some dead trees. Maybe later on in life those trees won't even be there because of erosion so It's always nice to see stuff like this.

Safina's Nature Poem

The air is so crisp and clear
Civilization is not near
I rub the dirt between my fingers
The smell of flowers and grass lingers.
As I walk up this trail
My body starts to feel frail.
But with every breath I take
I start to think it would be good to take a break.
I stop to smell the flowers.
This adventure could take hours
But I don't care
I am breathing all this fresh air.
I would rather spend my day in Mother Nature's backyard
Now that is something I take to the heart.

Avani

Different hues and shades of green
There's something about this pretty scene
Walking up nature's past
I make it to the top, at last

There's nothing better than looking down
at beautiful life, all around
I don't mind how the wind messes up my hair
being around such life makes me tend not to care

I don't feel judged by the dirt or the trees
or violated by a chilling breeze
but instead, these are the things that put me at ease.
these are the things, that live inside me.

Day 5- Coastal Trail

Oh, Friday was an interesting day. The reason why, you may ask: well, that day we were all going to bike. My first thoughts were, "this is not going to be fun." So everyone went on the bus, got dropped off, then we had to walk up a hill in order to get to the bikes. When we got there, it took a while to get our bikes. The worst part was that it was a very sunny day, so all of us were getting tired of waiting in the basking hot sun.
Finally, everyone got their bikes. some were happy and some were like whatever lets get this over with. From there on we were put into groups. I was in the middle group, I think .... well , I was behind because it's been a while since I have been on a bike, which, by the way, was not easy. I was alone for a while, then the middle last group came behind me. From there on I did not feel bad because I was not the only one coming last, there were more people behind me. Finally, we stopped for a little break, drank some water, then yet again we had to continue. The first group left faster than a roadrunner the rest of us we just went with the flow. I was by the side of my friend… until I lost control of my bike and went down a grassy hill. The good news is that I did not die. Then came the little group to come and help me to keep going on. The group that was helping had to stop because they needed to drink water, but I kept going. I was getting tired, but I knew that I had to get there. Sadly, I fell down again, so I walked the rest of the way. I heard cheers from the others and everyone saying, "yay, you made it!" I was so happy that I finally got to my goal. Then came the others and we cheered for them, too. From there we got on the bus and went home, and that was our crazy bike ride.
Friday was the bright sunny day that we all had to ride through. Don’t we all agree? Well, the day started in the classroom learning, you know it all. We had that great chicken lunch. It was great food. All the students went on the bus ride to downtown, walked up the steep hill, and went to the bikes. We got all of the bikes with the students lined up a picture for the paper. We even had to wait in that hot sun. So then we walked our bikes to that steep hill again. We got on the bikes, went down going fast now were just riding down the Coastal Trail. We went on a walkway across Westchester Lagoon.
So, we were all wondering when we would get to Earthquake Park, which only, like, two miles through the bike ride. When people got there the science group had to stay and do a little science there, but the writing class could go on, so I did.
I got to another stop at some other park and waited a little for some people to catch up. We went on again, riding the bikes. The next stop was the Kincaid Park. But the ride there was still fun. The worst part riding there was the big hill at the end. It was such a killer to bike up. I saw some people walk their bikes up, even I did. So we got there, got some water and we were all waiting for the other students to get here. When some people came to the end, some went on another bike ride around the park. When we got back, we waited for the bus to go and we all got on and the bus ride back. What a bright bike ride, we all had great Friday.

Day 4- Byron Glacier

"Trail Of Destiny"

Once upon a time there was a group of people that were reaching their destination of coolness. Byron Glacier was their relief from the heat. At the beginning of their journey they saw a warning about a bear being in the area the day before. Without fear, people began to head on their path of fate. They were glad to hear the running stream flow at the side of the trail. Past the trees, they saw the glacier, and became more determined to reach it. As they came to the opening to the shore, people were joyous, and ran to the stream to feel the chilling water.
As we got there, people made snowballs, and soon were told not to. The view of the glacier was beautiful. We saw the clear blue water; people decided to cool off by dipping their heads into the magical water. The hike for the cold was worth it to get a break from the heat.
Darin rounded up the pack to go back to the bus. On our journey back, we viewed colorful plants, green trees, and other visitors. I guess this glacier is very popular to visit because of the views. Than our epic trip ended, people were tired, and took naps.

The bus ride to Byron Glacier was nice, but it was very long and lots of people were getting tired on the way there. We finally got there and had lunch. There were BLT's that were really good! The hike wasn't that long, it was about 20 to 25 min. The glacier was beautiful and huge! There was also a small waterfall at the top of the glacier; it was so cool! On the way back to the bus we saw lots of people on their way to see the glacier. When we got on the bus, everyone was a little tired, and some people fell asleep.

Day 3- Hope and Gull Rock

This is Elai reporting on our trip to Hope. It was a very slow ride down to Hope. The bus driver was going about 15 to 25 miles per hour and I could tell because I sat up front. On our way we had a lot of laughter in the back of the bus. Many of the students that sat in the middle, near the mountain spotted mountain goats and other means of wildlife, while the other just stared blankly at the moving less body of water that stood beside the road and our bus. As we took our bathroom break, many kids were anxious to get off the bus and wander around. Some even used the disgusting, stinky toilet, while those that went wandering tried to wake up their sleeping body parts. As we passed the many trees, the students started to wonder when this bumpy ride would ever stop. When we pulled into Hope our fellow champions went rushing to the food as their stomachs growled. We grabbed our fishing poles, threw on some fishing gear and dashed to the river to yank out those mouth-watering pinks and silvers. One of us got slapped by two pinks and was left with a scar.

Hi, my name is Daniel. I’m going to tell you what happened on Wednesday. Today was a sunny day out and the trees were super green. On the bus ride some people saw some sheep on the rocks eating. When we got off the bus in Hope half of the kids went hiking and the other went fishing. I went hiking with the fast group. The people that went farthest were Joel, Jamie, and Brandon. On the way down some people saw a bear, some saw bear poop and a rabbit. When Brandon and Joel saw the rabbit, they started to chase after it. Now we'll hear from Sebastian.

Here at Hope there's combat fishing with peers for fun, getting bites and catching fish, some are lucky and some are not. Fish fight for fleet while you fight for fish, it has either been caught or lost. Silvers, Pinks, and Humpys in the Hope River. Only got nibbles and no bites, if I did their would be a fight and I would have a fish. Maybe if I go back again, then maybe I will catch something. Several students caught a salmon, bringing it home for dinner or maybe for a dog to eat. No worries, I had a lot of fun, there will always be next time in the hot summer sun.

Day 2- Arctic Valley

The day started with some poetry reading in the classroom. Although not everyone can be a fan of poetry, the students were encouraged to participate in interpreting the poem The Summer Day. They learned different ways to read a poem by not just reading the words, but thinking about what significance the words had in each and every sentence and sentence fragment. With much effort the students learned just how detailed one person could be when describing even the littlest things in life.
After some serious studying it was time to choose some literature. At first it did not seem intriguing to be reading a book, the class reviewed some of the literature that was offered and some were even excited to start reading. Without hesitation students picked their own book to read.

Ready to get out of the classroom and into Mother Nature’s backyard, everyone piled into the bus only to take a short cat nap. After about a half hour drive the road started to turn from a nicely paved road to dirt roads with bumps and a rocky beat. As the city got further and further away, the troop was getting closer and closer to bear country. The trees in the wild had a certain image to them, they were so green and plentiful of life.

When we did reach Arctic Valley, many of us realized that it was a lot colder than we thought it would be so a bunch of kids had to put on pants instead of shorts, and I myself layered up. We had our lunch, and then headed up. It was a bit foggy out, and overcast, but when everyone did get to the top the sun did peek out a few times. It was a lot colder at the top than when we were at the bottom, a lot more wind as well. The air felt like glacier air: pretty cold. We rested for a bit then separated into our classes and our class did a write up on the 5 senses. Then we headed back down and into town. Even though the hike was tiresome, I think it was worth the while to see such a pretty view.

Day 1- Kincaid Park

This is Ben Dexter of Write Alaska News reporting for Monday, July 18th.

Today marked the start of the 2011 session of Write Alaska. Along with Write Alaska this year, students will be attending a new class: Science Alaska. Science Alaska is a great option for the students who seemed too nerdy to be around the others.

This year, Write Alaska will once again focus on poetry and students will be out interacting with nature, reflecting on their outdoor experiences. Students attending Science Alaska will be taking pictures of flowers or something.

Here's Write Alaska's own Joel Bos with sports:

Today in sports we had game of capture the bowl. The winning team scored a lot of goals. The losing team scored a lot of goals too, though not quite as many. There was some discrepancy about the rules at first, however once the rules were added as we went, the game went way smooth. Midway through the game we were distracted by the call for much desired and appreciated pizza, salads and drinks.

In other news, those who needed a fishing license were unable to get them. After filling out all the forms it was later found out that they were under the wrong heading or something. After weighing the problems of time constraints and the length of the line, it seemed best to approach the issue at another time and/or place. There needs to be another attempt to make sure everyone has a proper license.

And now for today's weather. Things started out looking cloudy, but the skies cleared up just in time for the students to head to Kincaid Park. Many of the students embraced the sunshine and went for a walk on the trail. Nobody was eaten by a moose, although fresh tracks were spotted.

All in all, everyone got to run around, meet new people, and eat pizza. It truly was a day to remember.

Meet the Students

These are the students of Write Alaska 2011. Get to know them.

Tifa

Yo yo yo what's up peeps, I was born in Compton, California April 8th 1993, raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. It wasn't the best birth trip but it was alright.
I moved to Anchorage, Alaska in the year of 2004, my middle school year. I started 7th grade and went to school at Central Middle School, as years past I went to East High and now I'm finishing my senior year at South High and I cant wait.
The things I like are being first at everything and anything, mainly being the M.V.P in my life. What I really dislike are the haters in the world today, as in I wouldn't be able to have any privacy without anybody jumping into my business. Although I don't care its just really rude.
What inspires me the most is the military because what they do for us is incredible and one day I hope to be in the army so I can be there for someone else.

Jessie

I was born in Alaska but I was raised in Arizona. The school I go to now is West High School in Alaska. There are a lot of things I like and dislike. The things I really like are sleeping, playing games, swimming, and reading. I dislike to sunny and too rainy days, I also dislike people who are mean to other people and loud things. I love TMNT, Batman and Robin, The Flash, and lots of other thing that have superheros. I have a simple and good life and I love my family and friends and my cat Tiger.

Tyla

My name is Tyla Pico, I was born an raised here in Anchorage, Alaska. I have two other sisters, five other siblings from my moms side, and one older brother from my dad side in his past marriage. Bartlett and Save High are my current schools I went to. My goal is to finish school this year and attend collage to become a RN, because I like to help others. I have already completed a PCA class, now certified to work as a Person Care Assistant. For that will be my first step for becoming a RN. I like spending time with family and friends on my free time, watch movies/life time movies, play volleyball for fun, do things outside like hiking and camping when I get the chance. After I get my school and things done and my career set, I will then be able to move out of state to California and start something new!

We were those rare set of twins that were very identical and the only different is that he would be right handed and i would be still left handed. I like playing sports as big as I am; Football, Baseball, Soccer, Hockey, and most of all Rugby. Also I enjoy writing poems and listening to music. When I listen to music, a lot of time I listen to more then the beat of the bass, I listen to the lyrics and the message they have behind the song. My favorite song would have to be by John Legend singing Wake Up Everybody. With that being said I am a lyrical writer meaning i like to write thing that relate to me, my passion on thing or my surroundings. I moved to alaska when I was little with my family to start a new chapter in our lives. I am a Polynesian student that currently go to East High School, I'm going to be a junior this year and will graduate in 2013. My goal in life is to be able to capture a good paying job to support my family, parents and my sisters. Also to meet my creator one day on his terms and on not mines. My main dream is to me a father and give my son or daughter things that my parents wasn't able to get me. Sports in my caffeine and i an addict.

To be apart of a family like mine
is so divine
where love is shown
hurt is shared
our love for each other is never impaired

you hurt one
you hurt all
and as a family unit
we will all stand tall
for we are family
a family full of strength
a family full of love
a family no one can touch
that's why I love my family so much

everyone except Queenie .LOL.
